Block Paved Driveway in Sheffield
Transforming an Uneven Front Garden into a Durable, Stylish Driveway
This project in Sheffield involved a full transformation of a tired, uneven front garden into a clean, practical, and visually striking block paved driveway. The existing surface was made up of old paving slabs and worn concrete, with poor levels and visible weed growth throughout.
The homeowner wanted something low-maintenance, long-lasting, and smart enough to completely uplift the front of the property โ and block paving was the perfect choice.
Before the Installation
When we arrived on site, the existing area had:
- Uneven and sunken paving slabs
- Weed growth between joints
- Poor drainage and inconsistent levels
- Limited usable parking space
The layout didnโt make the most of the available space and gave the front of the property a dated look.
Groundworks & Preparation
As with any quality driveway, the most important part of this project was the groundwork.
We began by:
- Excavating the existing surface to the correct depth
- Removing all waste materials from site
- Installing a solid sub-base using MOT Type 1 aggregate
- Compacting the base thoroughly to create a strong foundation
A proper sub-base is essential for preventing sinking and movement over time, especially on driveways that will take vehicle weight .
We also ensured the correct falls were in place to allow water to drain away from the property.
Edging & Structure
To define the driveway and keep everything locked in place, we installed strong edge restraints around the perimeter.
Edge restraints are crucial in block paving as they prevent the blocks from spreading or shifting under pressure over time .
This also gave the driveway a clean, framed finish.
Block Paving Installation
Once the base was fully prepared, we moved onto laying the block paving.
- A layer of sharp sand was screeded to achieve a perfectly level surface
- Blocks were laid in a tight interlocking pattern for maximum strength
- Cuts were made neatly around edges and boundaries for a seamless fit
Block paving is laid individually, allowing for detailed patterns and a high-end finish, while also being incredibly durable under regular vehicle use .
